8 Complete, Customisable Job Descriptions for Every Key Role in an Australian Dental Practice
A signed job description is one of the most important documents in an employee's personnel file. It creates clarity, sets expectations, and is the foundation of every performance conversation. If a team member does not have a current, signed job description — this pack gives you everything you need to fix that today.
The Job Description Templates Pack 2026 contains eight complete, customisable job description templates covering every core role in an Australian dental practice — from the Practice Manager to the Practice Owner. Each JD includes a position purpose statement, a detailed duties list, qualifications and experience requirements, key competencies, performance standards, and a signature block for acknowledgement. All templates are aligned with the HPSS Award 2020 [MA000027] and updated for the DA classification changes effective 1 April 2026.
The pack includes 8 complete documents:
JD 1 — Practice Manager Leadership and team management, operations and systems, financial management, marketing and patient experience, and compliance. Includes performance standards covering production targets, FTA rate, recall pre-booking rate, and monthly financial reporting obligations. Award: HPSS Award 2020 or award-free above the high-income threshold.
JD 2 — General Dentist Clinical care, patient communication, team and operations, and compliance and AHPRA registration. Includes a critical note on the obligation to notify the Practice Manager immediately of any condition, limitation, or undertaking placed on AHPRA registration. Award: HPSS Award 2020 Health Professional classification or award-free if structured as an associate.
JD 3 — Dental Assistant Chairside clinical support, sterilisation and infection control, radiography (licence holders only), stock management, and patient care. Updated for the new Schedule J DA classification structure from 1 April 2026 — Entry Level, Certificate III, Experienced/Senior, and Advanced/Senior II. Award: HPSS Award 2020 Support Services classification.
JD 4 — Front Office Coordinator Patient communication and reception, appointment management, financial and administration, and recall and patient retention. Performance standards include 80% pre-booking rate, calls answered within 3 rings, and 100% FTA follow-up within 24 hours. Award: HPSS Award 2020 or Clerks — Private Sector Award 2020 (with guidance on which applies).
JD 5 — Dental Hygienist / Oral Health Therapist Clinical services for both Hygienist and OHT scope, patient education and recall, and compliance. Includes an extended scope section for OHTs covering restorative treatment, extractions, and independent practice within AHPRA scope. Award: HPSS Award 2020 Health Professional classification.
JD 6 — Treatment Coordinator Treatment plan presentation, case acceptance and follow-up, patient support and finance, and administration. Performance standards include a 70% case acceptance rate target, 2-week follow-up on all outstanding treatment plans, and written treatment plan summaries within 24 hours. Award: HPSS Award 2020 or award-free depending on salary and duties.
JD 7 — Second-in-Charge / Senior FOC (2IC) Operational leadership in the PM's absence, team support and mentoring, all FOC duties at a senior standard, and systems and administration. Includes a clear purpose statement: the 2IC is the PM's delegate — not just a senior receptionist. Award: HPSS Award 2020 Senior Support Services classification.
Document 8 — Practice Owner Role Clarity Not an employment document — a role clarity tool for Practice Owners. A side-by-side table of what the owner should focus on versus what should be delegated to the PM, covering clinical excellence, strategic direction, culture, financial oversight, key external relationships, and major investment decisions. Includes a 7-point Owner-PM relationship health checklist.
